Theatre East Presents Friday the 13th

Theatre East, a New York-based theatre company, decided to do a reading of the slasher classic Friday the 13th for Halloween. After talking to the director about the absurd nature of the story, I could sense how humour was a large driving reason behind his vision for the script. This opportunity to play with a dark sense of absurdity immediately resonated with me, and I enjoyed the chance to use my own sense of humour to create visuals.

I created a cross between the naive optimism and visual language of the Boy Scouts with much darker, morbid overtones. The hand-illustrated poster reflected the intimate and playful nature of the event.

Consumer Electronics Show

Since getting on our family’s 386 computer at the age of 6, I’ve always had a passion for technology. It’s amazing how contemporary science has enabled our lives to do things we couldn’t have considered. I even started drawing with a mouse long before I did on paper. So it was a really unique opportunity to use what current technology has enabled me to do now in order to represent the technology of the future.

The Consumer Electronics show is an annual event in New York for manufacturers to show off their latest technology bound for the market. For the tech community, this large convention becomes one of the primary windows into the future to see how our lives will be shaped by the objects we own and what modern technology and manufacturing is capable of.

I’ve recently learned the mechanics of digital 3D modeling and animation, and enjoy experimenting with the precise and technical nature of the medium to create abstract forms that I couldn’t have envisioned on my own. These digital creations served as the stepping stone for this project, representing the unexpected nature of our relationship with technology. With energetic and mechanical type
I sought to capture the systematic, yet chaotic nature of the field that is rapidly enveloping our lives.

The ___ Issue Magazine

I’m a little bit of a WWII history nerd, and can easily get lost in reading about the struggles of previous generations. When I realized, though, that I simply didn’t know if my country was still present in Afghanistan, I felt rather ashamed.

This project served two purposes; first to educate myself on the current state of these international conflicts, and second to question why myself (and many others) just don’t seem to know or care about it in the first place.

The purpose behind The Issue magazine is to examine the relationship between us and the seldom discussed social issues we face. It consists of two parts; The first is the magazine itself, which talks about the nature of modern warfare. The second part is a children’s-style activity book included with the magazine.

Alpha One Labs

After working for several years in a company that provides parts and supplies for groups such as Alpha One Labs, I wanted to give back to the electronics community in some way. These groups are often composed of technical professionals practicing a hobby in their spare time, and without the funding to hire trained designers, their identity is usually a result of necessity rather than creativity.

I wanted to portray the nature of what this organization seeks to encourage: the act of building. With a geometric language I sought to communicate this quality in addition to technical capability and precision. Meanwhile, the colour palette is meant to also reference construction, with geometric elements becoming building-blocks to create patterns. As for the logo itself, the ‘A’ and ‘1’ forms are connected with a roof and floor of sorts, to create a sense of dimension and space to reflect how Alpha One provides a physical location for its members to work.

Life of a Sharpie

All designers know the joy that comes from starting a brand-new marker after trying in vain to write with an old, faded one. Sharpies in particular seem to be the go-to tool for many professionals. So I found myself wondering... just how far does an old marker has travelled before it ends up being gleefully tossed away?

After doing the manual research and taking a Sharpie from new to dead, it would have been easy to express my findings in a single number or a stack of scribbled papers. Instead, I wanted to imagine what one continuous line would look like if it was something we found in our neighbourhood. So I used twine (lots of twine) to duplicate my findings and create a physical representation of what a Sharpie is capable of.

Long + McQuade

I play an instrument or two. Or seven. There's just something electrifying about learning a new instrument. So it's no surprise that I feel like a kid in a candy shop when I visit music stores.

Long + McQuade is not only one of those stores, but the biggest franchise in Canada. I decided to rebrand them to communicate the energy and vibrance musicians feel when they make music.

White on White Self Portrait

This sculptural project, made exclusively from white paper, is a metaphorical self-portrait of sorts, made to be a bit more  abstract and open to  interpretation. I portrayed myself as a series of keys, each one with the silhouette of my face forming the teeth.

Misc Animations

I rather enjoy animating, usually in After Affects and more recently Cinema 4D, too. I like it best when I can use it to bring static pieces to life as part of a larger identity or campaign. You can find those kinds pieces integrated with the appropriate projects. This is more of a collections of odds and ends that don't fit anywhere else, but I'm still pretty happy with.

ACAD Spring Show and Sale

"Boy, cut paper is fun!" "Man, stop-motion animation is awesome!" "Wow... Rotobrushing sure is kinda tedius." These were the thoughts that went through my head on this project. All told I had a blast, even though rendering it brought my computer to its knees.

Speed Channel ID

A short channel ID featuring fast cars doing fast things for the the (now defunct) Speed Channel.

4-String Monolith

Science. Precision. Mechanization. These are approximately the very opposite words you’d use to describe a ukulele. I’ll come clean up front: I play this instrument. It’s a plucky little distraction that gives me lots of enjoyment. So when it came time to animate an object being created from scratch, I turned to my beloved Uke for inspiration.

The ukulele is quite possibly the world’s most optimistic and naive instrument. This animation, made with Cinema 4D, envisions what it’d be like for one to be crafted not so much by the loving hands of a craftsman, but as a monolithic entity that is borne from nothing and just simply... is.
